Immune Function
Our immune function recognizes foreign matter and is able to neutralize it before it can do the body harm. In order to be effective, the immune system must distinguish between pathogens, viruses and parasites, and healthy tissue within the body. A strong immune system is necessary to keep us free from disease and infection.
Depressed Immune Function
Children and seniors are especially vulnerable to a weakened immune system. Because of this, they may get sick more often and symptoms may be more severe.
Contributing factors include:
Sugary/processed foods-These confuse and suppress the immune system. Juice, such as orange juice and apple juice contain high amounts of sugar.
Environmental toxins - These include chemicals like additives, pesticides and poisons that make their way into our food supply.
Stress - Any negative emotion, held over a long period of time can wear down the body’s immune system, causing fatigue and exhaustion.
Cigarette smoke and Alcohol - Even in small amounts, cigarette smoke can depress the body’s immune system. Overuse of alcohol can harm immune function as well.
Immune deficiencies - Some infections or diseases target the immune system, including AIDS. Others can be due to genetic factors or abnormalities.
