Yeast & Candida Over 20 species of Candida yeasts cause human infections. Most of these live on our skin and mucous membranes. In general, the yeasts are harmless, but an overgrowth of these organisms can cause symptoms of candidiasis. These are dependent on the area of the body infected. Candidiasis in the throat and mouth is referred to as, “thrush”, while vaginal candidiasis is known as a “yeast infection”. If the Candida enters the bloodstream and spreads throughout the body, a condition known as, “invasive candidiasis” occurs. This can be quite serious, even life threatening if not treated aggressively. Yeast & Candida Supplements Candida and Digestion A small amount of yeast lives in the mouth and in the intestines of our bodies. This is essential, not only to digest the food we consume, but also to help us absorb the nutrients we need. Sometimes however, the candida fungus, (in the form of yeast) multiplies to the point of toxicity. When this happens, it can break down the intestinal wall and leak into the bloodstream, causing not only digestive issues, but other more serious health consequences as well. Probiotics-These are healthy bacteria, that when introduced into the body can help prevent yeast infections. Similar to intestinal bacteria, probiotics are found in yogurts and other foods such as dark chocolate, sauerkraut and pickles. Natural supplements can also be a good source for probiotic support.
