Pain and Inflammation
The central purpose of pain and inflammation is to initiate immediate tissue repair and to cease further damage to other cells. Inflammation helps clear dead cells from the original injury site so that healing can begin. Signs of inflammation may include, heat, swelling, pain, redness, and an inability for joints to move easily. While most of us try to avoid pain, it is necessary to signal the brain to respond to an illness or injury in the body.
Chronic Inflammation - A Health Problem
Inflammation in response to an illness or an injury in the body is necessary to begin the body’ healing process. Chronic inflammation is a serious health concern, however. Researchers have linked diet and the lack of certain nutrients to inflammation in the body as well.
Nutrients and Inflammation
Increase Omega-3s - These fatty acids help fight inflammation and are found in cold water fish like salmon and tuna.
Decrease processed foods - Fried foods, sugary foods and prepackaged meals should be avoided if possible. Instead, vegetables, fruits, nuts, tea and small amounts of dark chocolate can be substituted for unhealthy choices. Certain plant-based foods contain phytochemicals and antioxidants, which may decrease the COX-2 enzyme, that reduces joint inflammation.
Adopt a Mediterranean diet - This consists of lean protein, including fish and poultry and emphasizes plant-based foods such as beans, vegetables and olive oil. Many people report a decrease in joint pain and tenderness and an improvement in their sense of well being after eating a Mediterranean diet over a period of time.
