Hair, Skin & Nails

Many of us underestimate the importance of healthy hair, skin, and nails. These are the protective coverings for the body that prevent germs from entering our system and potentially damaging vital organs. According to the American Skin Association, skin helps regulate body temperature through perspiration and works to maintain a healthy immune system as well. In addition, skin works to produce precious vitamin D, important in developing healthy teeth and bones.

The Importance of Hair & Nails

Hair and nails protect the body in a number of ways. Hair on the head holds in body heat, and eyelashes and eyebrows keep dirt and germs from entering the eyes and nose, as well as shielding eyes from direct sunlight. Hair is made from a non-living protein, keratin and grows from hair follicles.
Finger and toenails are necessary to protect soft tissue at the ends of the fingers and toes and to help with grasping objects. These are made up of the hard protein, keratin as well.

Environmental Damage, Nutrition and Toxins

Hair, skin and nails may become damaged when exposed to natural elements in the environment, toxins and poor nutrition.

Smoking - The top layers of hair become brittle due to smoking and malnourishment of the follicles.

Alcohol - Alcohol dehydrates the skin.

Sunlight - Harmful UV rays damage skin cells and hair.

Hair care products - Some shampoos, dyes, and permanent solutions contain harsh chemicals that dry and damage hair.

Nutrition - Poor nutrition can contribute to dry, damaged hair and skin. The lack of protein, healthy fats and vitamin A may cause deterioration.
